Why You Need Perseverance to Succeed in Business
There are many qualities you must possess to be a successful entrepreneur, perseverance is one of them. Building a business from the ground up isn’t as simple as you might think, it takes perseverance. Sure you can get by at the beginning operating on sheer excitement and adrenaline.
But, there comes a point in your business where you are going to have to draw on that burning desire deep inside of you. You’ll have to determine for yourself if the reward is worth the journey. Your perseverance will be tested to the max.
You will need perseverance to make it to your goal. (tweet this)
- Perseverance by definition is: “steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success”
Story about perseverance
This past weekend my business partner and I traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to attend a company training event. My network marketing company offers leadership training that is vital for long term success. The anticipation to travel to a city we hadn’t been to before made the trip all that much more exciting.
Our trip began at 2 o’clock AM as we packed the car with a laptop, suitcases and our notepads. The two hour trip to the airport flew by as we chatted about our business goals. We talked about the team-mates we would be reconnecting with from around the country that is more like family than business associates.
The first flight out of Sacramento was at 6 o’clock AM. Since we fly stand-by seats are not guaranteed. Instead, we wait to see if there are any paying passengers that are late, don’t show or cancel. Unfortunately, everyone arrived on time and the first flight out left for Phoenix, Arizona, and their connecting flights. Our perseverance was about to be tested early.
I’ll not bore you with our entire day spent in Sacramento. Just know that for the next 14 ½ hours we worked on our computers and iPhones waiting. Tired and anxious we waited at the gate for the final flight of the day.
Finally, our names were called and we boarded the plane, headed for Phoenix. Walking down the jet bridge perseverance quotes as this one came to mind.
“Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working.” ~ Unknown
Much to our dismay we soon learned after landing that there were no connecting flights to St. Louis until morning. We were disappointed but our perseverance didn't allow for us to turn around and go home.
Instead, we found a quiet terminal and settled in trying to get a good night’s sleep. Have you ever slept in an international airport? Let’s just say I’ll never complain about a hotel bed again!
My friend and I got about four hours of sleep. (if you call lying down with one eye open, one foot on your computer and your head on your purse sleeping…okay we slept) haha! Now that is perseverance at it's finest.
I was inspired when I woke to record the video below just for you. This is what a leader does, they persevere. When your why is big enough you won’t quit. You will continue persevering, doing something despite difficulties or delays in achieving success.
A real-life example of perseverance
We made the first flight out to St. Louis the next morning. Both of us were excited at the prospect of making the first day of training on time. There is more to the story but I’ll leave that for another article.
Just know that to be a successful leader you will have to dig deep; your perseverance will be tested time and again. You will need to know that your reward is worth all the perseverance you endure along your journey to your goal.

I just wrote an article and one of the topics was perseverance. Your article inspired me, Carla.
This is so true Carla “Together we can all achieve our dreams again if our perseverance continues to the goal.” We need encouragers & like minded people on the journey to help us persevere & not give up!
Thank you Norma. You are one of my encouragers for sure. The guidance you give through your weekly articles helps guide me through the maize of social media and blogging…thank you!
Excellent article, Carla! Perseverance is essential to business success. Love this quote, “Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working.” … and I will add “women”. Thank you for sharing your personal story on perseverance.
You are welcome Robin. Appreciate you taking the time to follow my journey. Looking forward to following yours, too.
Yes, have to keep telling ourselves never to give up. It is easy to get discouraged. What keeps me going is I love what I do. When that is the case, it is easier to persevere.
That’s right Terri…never give up. That is the key to working for yourself, loving what you do.
GREAT post Carla! Perseverance (and lots of it) is essential to business success. My best take away from this post is ‘When your why is big enough you won’t quit.’. Says it all!
Thanks Dawn. It truly takes a deep “why” to persevere in any endeavor whether it’s a hike in the woods or building a business.
Wish I had known you were in Phoenix! My sofa is much more comfortable than the airport!
Oh Tina what an offer, thank you. If I had known girl I sure would have called for sure…hoping there won’t be a next time but if there is…I’m there.
Oh, Carla! Staying up all those hours with hardly any sleep used to be easy but not so now at age 70+. Yes, I can do it in an emergency situation but not intentionally. Perseverance is critical to business success and those all nighters are necessary at times but generally are not the best decision for me personally. They compromise my productivity in the long run. Does that come with wisdom, age or experience? You let me know!
I’m not sure those kind of hours are easy for anyone Pat and certainly aren’t the norm…we weren’t born to stay awake like that. But, like you in an emergency situation we can push our bodies for a time. It truly was only because of my Protandim that I could do that…in years past even though I was younger there would have been no way I could stay up that long, endure the stress of standby flights and still have a decent attitude toward anyone or anything. The very first benefit I received from Protandim was an increase in endurance, a sense of the fog lifting from my brain and over all well being. I bounced back from that trip as if it were a daily occurrence that’s the benefits of Nrf2 activation.
Perseverance is the true grit of success. Great story!
Thanks, Robin. Perseverance is a must for anyone building a business online or off.
Since I was 19 years old I have always worked for myself. It does take alot of hard work and dedication. It is also so rewarding in the end.
I love this Carla! Perseverance is so important especially in business because there are a million things that will come and try to shake you and sway you and get you to turn back! Stay the course!
Thank you Mike. You sure hit the nail on the head about distractions. That’s why building a business online is a journey, it takes twists and turns but if you stay on the road…you’ll eventually get there.
Love blogs that draw on personal experience. It is how we are connected, get to know one another, engage and learn from each others experiences. I think it was fabulous of you to create the video under those unique circumstances. It told your entire story and took us on that persevering journey with you. I agree, perseverance or persistence is vital and so its finding solutions to problems and situations under all types of circumstances. You did that.
Allot of people think that a business is born and you are instantly rich, if you do not persevere nothing will ever happen and you will be where you were when you started.
I agree, Carla, perseverance is key! Most definitely! AND as you’ve stated…it will be tested! Knowing this, it keeps me motivating and moving forward. You are such an inspiration and I thank you. Blessings.
Whether it’s sleeping in airports or struggling with vendors or whatever, as a start-up you have to be willing to do what it takes. Perseverance, as you say, is key. Your next favorite word will be “momentum,” which is what you will have when your business starts taking on an energy and movement of its own … and some things happen without you having to be directly responsible for them happening. You have to love this stuff! 😉
Perseverance and determination to succeed.
Thank you for stopping by Lynell appreciate your time to read and share.
Carla, I am so glad to find your blog. I feel like I sort of already know you from our mutual acquaintance, Sandi Krakowski 🙂 I, too, am over 50, but don’t yet have grandma as part of my title. One day! Thanks for a great post!
Wow! Nice to meet you Terri and I’m so happy you found me. Being a grandma is simply the best. Being a work from home fiery grandma is even better, lol
